Infrastructure Engineer | 12 months | Hybrid (Glasgow 3 days)

Day Rate - circa £450

Harvey Nash's Client is recruiting for an Infrastructure Engineer who will focus on integrating and automating vendor backup product solutions to meet the Firm's data protection strategy. Tasks will involve performing engineering-level deep-dives into operational incidents and integrating third-party vendor backup solutions, alongside developing in-house applications that will become part of the technology platform for the business, including testing and capacity management tooling. The candidate must have a strong understanding of the on-premise technology stack, including storage, networking and operating systems and be proficient in at least one high-level programming language. Ability to work as part of a global team is a requirement. In addition, the candidate must be able to listen to customer requirements and be able to advise, discuss and articulate technical solutions effectively.

Main Duties:

  • Integration:
    • Plan and perform integration of 3rd party software with the Firm's infrastructure and existing solutions
    • Automation: Identify opportunities to automate repetitive tasks such as initial builds, config drift detection and healing
  • Observability:
    • Work with stakeholders in the service organisation to identify gaps and solutions to address them
  • Innovation:
    • Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technologies. Proactively suggest improvements and innovative solutions to enhance our products and processes
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and other engineers, to deliver high-quality software solutions.

Skills Required:

  • In-depth experience of backup and data protection platforms, in particular Veritas/Cohesity NetBackup and NetBackup Flex 10.x
  • Excellent ability to debug complex and novel issues, understanding the need to go beyond the documentation provided with a product
  • Excellent understanding of networking, including troubleshooting, performance and tuning
  • Excellent analytical skills, capable of fast decision making using sound judgement, and not afraid to explore new ideas
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with customers with differing technical specializations Ability to translate ambiguity into actionable steps
  • Ability to use various sources of information to find answers where immediate documentation may not be available
  • Good organizational and English communication skills are required, including prioritization of multiple projects and objectives

Skills that will help you in the role:

  • Programming skills in Python and strong experience with code change tracking (Git) and CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins)
  • Understanding of data deduplication technology
  • Good understanding of data protection issues particular to databases and database backup functionality (e.g. agent-based backups, RMAN, XBSA)
  • Systems administration experience in UNIX and/or Windows Server environments preferred but not required
  • Experience in other areas of storage (SAN, NAS, S3 object storage) desirable
  • Experience with Kubernetes or OpenShift Experience of cloud computing (AWS / Azure)
  • Experience in software vulnerability detection, security hardening and penetration testing
